Since you say they don't eat, I assume the room may be a bit cool. Perhaps the female acquired a respiratory illness that went undetected because of their inactive lifestyle during the winter. She may have also been suffering from some long-term nutritional defficiency that finally caught up with her after several years. I have seen this in turtles that are not eating a nutritionally complete diet.
