California Assembly Bill 409

Posted by Pete Kuhn on July 22, 1998 at 18:35:00:

If you belong to a Herp Society please ask your group to write a letter opposing this poorly written legislation.

Assembly Bill 409 has been approved by the Assembly and is before the
Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildlife.
While the regulation of some animal species is no doubt necessary the
bill as written could seriously effect our ability to keep animals.

- Should the Legislature grant CA Fish & Game Commission the full
authority to decide which species of animals should be restricted in
their ownership?

-AB409 does not set guidelines for the procedures or criteria for
listing species as "restricted", for the role of agencies or
organizations other than CFGC in the listing of species, or for a
process that allows for public opinion.

-If passed, the bill could be used to make illegal the keeping of most
animals in captivity.

I encourage you to read the bill and write Senators via email or snail
mail to express your concerns. Even if you are not a California
resident your opinion will help. NRAAC has posted email links to
Senators along with sample letters and a link to the AB409 web site.

An original letter is most effective but a form letter is better than
none.

Join NRAAC if you haven't already. We need to protect our interests.
There is legislation pending in many states across the country that
could gravely effect out hobby. There is no charge to join NRAAC but
financial support is needed to keep up the fight.
