hey,
i also recently found out in the last year about the health issues with goldfish. i typically never feed these to my turtles unless im trying to get one to eat or if my local bait store is out of minnows and brim. ive seen turtles that were raised on goldies and crawdads, and appeared healthy as can be. however, i doubt that an ally snapper, indoors, fed only goldfish would live very long. its like feeding a tortise iceberg lettuce. they like it, but it aint doing em much good. in fact, recent evidence shows that long term feeding of goldfish can be detrimental to ANY turtles health.
that said, i did have a pic of my ally snapper with some goldies in there, these were merely to initiate acclimation and a feeding response from a thin turtle. i have since removed the goldfish and replaced them with jumbo shiners. the best fish to feed are bluegill, sunfish, crappie, bass, and other fish of that brand. goldfish are members of the carp family whichincludes koi. guppies are great for young turtles, as are rosy reds.
