I catch(and release) quite a few snappers every summer, most in the 10-25 pound range, in a stream that runs by my apartment. One of my "repeat captures" loks a bit like you describe, but more of a bright rusty orange than a true red. That individual is 8-10 pounds. Never got around to getting any pics, though-didn't realize so many people were into snappers.
