Mark,

As for a field Guide, the new "Field Guide To Costa Rican Reptiles & Amphibians" by Twan Leenders is a good place to start....it came out last year. I don't know where you live, but I saw the guide for sale at a bookstore a couple blocks from the Pedestrian Mall in San Jose last month. It's readily available here in the states...try Amazon.com or Zoobooksales.com if you can't find it locally.

As for optimum cage construction....Boas(B. constrictor) aren't that difficult to house. A square cage made of 3/4 or 1/2" plywood will suffice.....add some cutout windows with nylon coated wire mesh so they don't rub their noses raw. A locking hinged door will suffice. Assuming the animal is ~7' as an adult I would make the cage 1.5m x 1.5m x 0.5m as a minimum. If you have more space....bigger is not necessarily better, but it nevers hurts to have space. Give the snake suitable hiding spaces.

That's the basic idea.

Matt
