Both genera are well distributed throughout south america. To the best my knowledge some species of Liophis have been reclassified to Leimadophis. One key feature that helps when it comes to tell these genera appart from each other is the fact that Leimadophis have one apical pit in each dorsal scale, on the other hand Liophis do not have any apical pits whatsoever.
