In all the years I've searched for plants and animals in the wild, and having done ecological restoration in my career, I still believe habitat destruction and fractionalization has the greatest impact on wild populations. I think birds of prey and other animals that eat snakes have a greater impact than human collectors, particularly with more and more herps being bred in captivity these days. Personally, all my snakes are captive bred, and though it would be easy for me to go and collect I prefer the temperment of propagated animals. I don't want to play down the importance of limited and regulated collecting, but I think all too often the occasional collector gets the brunt of demonization when there are so many other factors that potentially have a greater impact on wild populations. For every animal you see in the wild there are many others you don't and therefore to properly access wild populations requires a thourough biologic study rather than an occaisional look.
