Questions about bowl feeding...

I've been reading a few posts lately and I've seen a couple of you mention "bowl feeding." What exactly do you mean?

Do the crickets you put into the bowl just stay there (b/c the dish is deep enough) or do you have to rip off a leg of the cricket before you put them in the dish?

Can someone elaborate on what you mean by bowl feeding, and what size bowl you would recommend for a crested gecko?
