Are you sure there is no shed restricting the area? If not perhaps it got caught somewhere (lid, branch, etc) for an extended period of time and blood flow was cut off? The chances are low that it is an infection of some sort, but it cannot be ruled out entirely. All I can do is really give you ideas; it is impossible to tell without seeing it or the environment for a better understanding of what it might be.
