:Use an incandesent light, they will not use belly heat and you need to raise the ambient temps, also if that substrate is crushed walnut(thats what it looks like)I would get rid of it, they have an incredible sense of smell, and if you should spill any babyfood on substrate they will eat it.
:The top of the tank is taken up with grow lites so incandesent light isnt an option. The heat pad or panel would be attached to an outside wall to help raise the ambient air temp not the bottom of the tank. The grow lites put out a little heat raising the upper tank temps to around 73.
No the substright is not crushed shell. If you look closer it is a very fine mixture sold by pmgecko. It holds moisture well without molding, I have even used it to incubate eggs. We have made a screened blend of our own we are useing in some setups for AFT's and gargoyles and it seeems to be fine.
