:i used to use a rigid heavy duty freestanding pond shell that you can get at any home improvement store...they come in all shapes and sizes and can be used indoors or on a porch. the basking lamp can be clamped to the side, and often a shelf is built into it for basking. unfortunately for us apartment dwellers, sometimes an aquaruim is more appropriate.
I agree that larger areas are best. I keep my breeder adults in a 3500 gallon pond. During winter months they are moved to a 1000 gallon indoor pond with metal halide lighting. Not everyone has the finances for this or the space. Aquariums set up properly are fine for up to 4 and 5 year old RES's. Even then you really need at least 125 gallons to be adequate.
