Congrats on your new turtle. I got two RES about a year ago and I love them. Yes, if you handle them, they do get to know you. We can not hand feed our RES. One was very aggressive for a long time, but she is now pretty friendly, and has not bitten the kids in a while. The other one was friendly from the beginning, and the kids love both of them. Best of luck. This forum is a great help for questions.
