Housing RES with Painted?

I have a young RES who is currently kept in a seperate tub from my adult EPT. He's not the best climber or swimmer yet, so I won't be moving him to the deep waters soon, but i was wondering if/when it would be possible. I always see mixed breeds housed together at the pet store, and obviously the species commune well in nature, but I'm concerned that my older turtle might see the younger as a large food morsel. Do I have to wait until they are equal size, and are there instances of turtles not bonding well at all? Thanks
