Crickets aren't too bad, and it is fun watching them chase them around the tank. I don't know if they are a necessary part of their diet, but mine love both crickets and earthworms. I have to buy them anyway to feed to other critters, the turtles eat whatever the others won't eat. They are the dogs of the reptile world :)
