Any background on its genetics?
Does the name 'Larry Rouch' (sp?) ring a bell? The strain is supposedly from Baltimore County, Maryland, circa 1981 if I remember correctly. Andre' might know more exacting details.
There are a few different stories as to the origins of the rusty rat. I stopped working with them a few years ago when it was suggested to me that they were not pure black rats. I really can't say for sure since I no longer work with them. Maybe Andre will give his thoughts?? I know he has gotten some very strange and rather interesting breeding results with rusy X licorice and perhaps other morphs.
