I thought that the article I quoted was relevent to the threads that have been on this forum the last week or so. I'm not saying it is correct, just relevent for supporting the subject. Gary Allen had posted the question from his own experience concerning black rat snakes getting darker and losing their pattern. His observations had been that he hadn't seen them get much darker or lose pattern after about 3 feet if I remember correctly. I am leaning towards thinking now that there is a melanistic black rat snake population in Kentcucky and there is a black rat snake population in Kentucky. The melanistic population offspring will be lighter and show patterns from the start and will get darker with age. The black rat snake population offspring will be dark and show little pattern almost from the start.
