Bravo. Nice observation. Here are a couple of pictures of neonate black rats from the same locality which look very different. The pictures were taken in nothern Christian County back in the late summer of '01 within a couple of weeks of each other and within a couple of miles as the crow flies. I would venture to say that the darker one could possibly grow up to be lighter than other. I'm not saying that it would definitely happen that way, but just that it well could.
