This is the best time of the year to find any of the Masticophis. Look under surface debris (esp. plywood, tarpaper, etc.) on sunny days when the air temperature is relatively low. Under these conditions, they will usually just sit there while you snap away. Additionally, you won't have to waste any energy in fruitless attempts to chase them down. Western Coachwhips will occasionally feign death (like a Hognose) when they're exposed to low temperatures (i.e., <50F).
