I've never seen one out at night in the wild(we have Easterns where I live, but they too, are supposed to be diurnal), but I do know that my captive Western will not eat during the day. He waits until night, then eats the thawed mice I put in his cage. I have yet to see him eat, but the mouse is always gone the next morning, and the snake has a noticable bulge. He's a pretty good little snake, a bit nippy when you reach in the cage for him, but settles down right away once you pick him up, and has some nice coloring, so I can't complain about him at all.
