I have seen snakes that fit your description right after they have eaten a very large meal - usually another snake.
And at least in captivity they can get very defensive after eating such a large meal.
Not sure about the tail missing, though. Wild snakes can lose quite a bit of their tails and still survive. Very common in Garter snakes around where I live.
