a tail no longer...

I have a question. I have several turtles...painted, RES, snappers...
Anyway, while I was cleaning the tank of the western painted turtle, i put him in with my RES. Well, my RES decided that he'd eat my painted's tail for lunch. It is gone! All of the way down to the "hole". This happend a couple of weeks ago and there is no change in the painted's behavior or health. Is this something that will heal or what? I mean, can he live a normal? Any experience with this? THanks for any info.
