painteds are native to NC (I'm in NC). It's highly unlikely this animal was once a pet and then she found it. Even if it were, releasing it where it was found is the best bet. Painteds are extremely common in the pet trade, and sell for $5-$15, so folks will more often go find one at a reptile expo or pet store than look for adoption. Ask her to do what's best for the animal, take it where she found it and release it. It will take care of itself just fine.
