: i run into this problem all the time, ive been chased out of areas with nothing more than a camera for "Disturbing habitat" how can a ranger tell me i cant go somewhere on public property?. i really dont have any answers for you. from what ive found there is no laws against handling wild reptiles but rangers think everyone but them is endagering the wildlife. my only suggestion, be more secretive in your work. when i go herping i carry my backpack and camera i dont bring any obvious things like hooks, nets, etc. and when you see a ranger simply wave and smile :) fact is i have yet to have a freindly experiance with a ranger and my recent attempts to gain their help saving some wildlife in a local park left me with a bad feeling.

rangers are buttholes.I"m from south jersey and here at least their very unobservant.their easy to avoid except where you park.always stash your catch before you get to your vehicle and then scout your vehicle area before returning with the catch.learn some basic tracking skills and keep snakes in something like a small cooler with a spout like you drink out of and if a ranger sees you pretend to take a drink.never carry snake sticks a walking stick will sufice for pinning or hooking if shaped right.
a fishing license is a good idea so if your caught ripping apart logs you can say your looking for bait.also camo clothing and a little stealth goes a long way in avoidance.a pair of binoculars and a bird guide and a little ornithological knowledge will pass you off as a birder right quick.leave binocular case and bird book in car and they"ll leave it alone thinking you a birder.i was harrassed by a ranger once who saw a reptile guide on my seat and assumed i was herping.believe it or not i wasnt though i never miss a shot at a nice snake.i basically told him he was a butthole and if he didnt have anything on me to get out of my face which he did and since then I"ve changed vehicles and tags and leave only bird books on the seat:-)
sorry but I"m just one of them 12th generation americans that have ancestors that fought in every war in american history, rebs, yanks the whole 9 yards and have had bred into me a blatant disrespect for asinign laws that are put there for no other reason then to control people.you put up the bulldozers and I"ll put up my hooks.
P.S, I take back the sorry on second thought.
Al
