:is there a quick way to cycle an aquarium in a week or so? i have an established fish tank and want to set up a newt tank. can i use some gravel or a used filter from the fish tank to get the balance going good in a newt tank? thanks!

Yes, exactly right. Use a filter or gravel from the established tank. It's still a good idea to monitor the ammonia level, just to be sure. (By the way, the waterfall-style power filter that is popular for fish tanks is not a good choice for newts - too many gaps to escape through.)
