Newt: where to start?

Last summer I bought a newt and was grossly mis-informed by the pet store on how to care for it. Sadly, it died. This summer, I want to get a newt or two. But I want to do it right this time!!! Any advice? (my one i had last year wouldn't even eat anything! i tried several different foods. newt pellets, bloodworms, etc.) I have a 5.5 gal tank or a 10 gal tank i will probably put it in.
