Hello Beth, smallmouth sals can be easily housed like any other Ambystoma. I recommend reading these caresheets:

The care will work the same for A. texanum. I've kept smallmouth sals longterm in the past and have found they will not eat crickets, they'll only eat earthworms, nightcrawlers, waxworms, and grubworms. Good luck and have funb, they get very tame and friendly once they settle in.
