Almost forgot. . .you need rock or other coarse device for the simple purpose of giving the snake something to break the seal so to speak allowing the snake to shed. I use rocks that lay flat in the bottom of the cage so not to risk crushing the snake. . .although really the rocks aren't heavy enough to do any damage. . .better safe than sorry. . .and NEVER EVER EVER keep two milk snakes and/or king snakes in the same enclosure.
