Typically a fertile egg will be firm to the touch, not like a chicken egg, but it will definately feel firm.
As far as coloration goes, generally if the egg starts turning a yellowish color its a dud. Most fertile eggs stay nice and white, unless they are stained by your lay box medium.
The easiest way to tell if an egg is fertile is by candling, get one of those penlights or mini flashlights and see if the egg glows red or yellow. It might take a week or so before you will be able to get accurate results candling.
