Chris,

Back in the good old days when you could field collect Okeetee and nearby properties in Jasper County, SC., we always found the freshly burned fields very productive. Box turtles seemed to the only occasional casuaties of this springtime routine. I never found a snake that showed any evidence of injury from this practice. I even wondered if the heat from the burn was a possible cue for them to end their hibernation and get active. Furthermore, those snakes are much easier to spot when coiled or stretched out by a burned over stumphole.
