hi folks,
if you're all getting the same email response, that should tell you something: peter is getting several complaints about this subject. cartoonists know all too well that email travels far and wide, so they (as anybody else who deals with the public) have to stick to one story. you've got it - it's an acknowledgement of your letters.
looking at what's been posted here, it seems a lot of you have informed peter what he said that was misleading. but i don't know that anybody has suggested a course of action to take to fix what's happened (print corrections, etc.).
what i'd suggest:
write your letters again. this time, send one copy to peter guren, and one copy to rick newcombe, the ceo of creators syndicate. make sure you put cc: and the name so they each know the other has received the letter. this will up the ante.
rather than dwell on the lettuce or jump rope jokes in the strip, focus on the inappropriateness of recommending to children - his target audience, a potentially dangerous animal that can grow to be six feet, is a known potential carrier of salmonella, and requires specific nutritional needs and care as well as a lot of space.
if rick newcombe sees that one of his cartoonists is recommending an animal that could potentially make someone sick, it probably won't go over very well. this is possibly a legal liability for creators syndicate. cartoonists have editors, and this is exactly what they're there for. i'd ask that a correction be printed in Ask Shagg that gives better information. if someone can recommend a better reptile to start with, maybe he correct the situation gracefully.
make suggestions of how you want this to be resolved. give the cartoonist a way to get out easily and spread the message you want spread.
