You are very right about the eye closing. Closed eyes are an improvement over a spastic behaving iguana, but an iguana who is calm w/o dewlap extended & eyes open when petted is the best possible reaction to strive for. I have never diluted myself that my lizards love being petted because I am pretty good at reading moods, but my iguanas have all seemed to tolerate (almost like) being petted on the dewlap after time anyway-- they can taste you, then allow you to proceed.
