I recremend ignoring Max when s/he tries to get tough. When I got Dexter, I was convinced that he was the meanest scaley critter alive! The only way I convinced Dexter that biting would do nothing was by pretending like his bite didn't scare me away. Even if it meant holding him while cleaning out the bite wound, I would let him know that that kind of behavior will get him nowhere.
Keep working on Max's temperment. Don't let one little temper tantrum ruin it for you!
