When you rescue an ig, do you ask the people where they purchased it? If not, maybe that should be a question asked. I don't know to many people who go to a breeder to buy any animal on an impulse. Impulse buying (IMHO) mainly comes from seeing something cute at a pet store. Where your given wrong information and don't know that igs will get 5-6ft and possibly agressive. Where do those igs at the pet store come from? Farms and importers? Don't know to many pet store that sell igs they bought from breeders. They would have to charge to much and they wouldn't be competetive.
Where do the 100s of thousands of igs being sold come from? Breeders or farms and importers? Who drove the price down on igs so that they are a disposible animal? Breeders or farms and importers?
One of the ways to stop something is to first identify who or what group of people your against. Everyone in general isn't going to cut it. Animal abuse and animal rescue goes alot deeper then just igs. People in general have always abused animals in one way or another.
OK, lets say the impulse buying is mainly from pet stores. Now what? How do we stop the sale of iguanas by unknowledgeabe people? Maybe if people bought their igs from breeders or rescued existing igs that would make it unprofitable for pet stores to carry them. The only way I can see doing that is to educate people. Even that will only slow it down. Remember the alligator craze. I'm sure the people that bought them realized that they were going to get big and possibly mean. They did it anyway.
Lets support the ones that do it right and and steer people away from the ones that do it wrong.
