I agree with Sue, 110%. I have SIX green iguanas available this week alone. One lady had four and stated she was unable to take care of them properly. One has already died.
If you folks want to keep breeding iguanas, go for it. Just do me a courtesy and send me the names of all these people you find who want iguanas knowing they will reach 5-6' in length, live 20 years, and require daily attention and a specialized diet.
It IS heartbreaking to see the conditions of these once loved pets. The most common excuse I hear? 'We just dont' have time for it anymore..' after 3-8 years on average.
One of the things Virginia Reptile Adoptions does is to hold the ig an extra week, maybe two, to find the BEST home for it where it will remain for the rest of it's life. If the prospective owner is within a few hours drive, I go out and meet them and inspect their animals and their homes and iguana setups to be sure. I also have a condition that in the event the new owner can no longer keep their iguana for ANY reason, it is to come back to me.
How many iguana breeders/sellers out there are doing this?
