the KY report ...
well, we all had lots of laughs over this topic in tues. chat ... but on the serious side there were questions about the possible toxicity of KY to igs ...

for any who missed the original discussion: it has been suggested that using KY jelly as a 'lizard lotion' would be more beneficial than using, say, mineral oil ... the reason being that KY is water soluable and therefore, less messy and easier to rinse off and at the same time would provide some relief and help in the itchy shedding process ... the concern was if KY would be toxic since igs tend to taste *everything*

IMHO, this would be a safe thing to use for igs ... also keep in mind, that while igs *do* lick everything thay can, they *can't* for the most part, reach their own bodies and so any ingestion due to licking it off themselves would be *extrememely minute* ...

ok, this is *KY jelly* brand specific ... (if you send me other brand names, i can look them up too)

Reference used: "Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products" 5th edition Gosselin, Smith, Hodge 1984

{the Toxicity Rating scale goes from "1" thru "6" with "1" being practically non-toxic ... (ie: for all practical purposes, you can not hurt yourself with it)}

KY jelly contains:
Sodium Carboxymethycellulose ... (couldn't find it listed in my reference book ... assume it's not mentioned due to non-existant toxicity?)

Sodium Alginate ... Toxicity Rating of "1" ... this substance is prepared from kelp and is used as an emulsifier + stabilizer in *ice cream* and pharmaceuticals

Glycerin ... is an emollient + demulcent when used on skin ... "oral toxicity is rodents is very low"

Propylene Glycol ... Toxicity Rating of "2" ... Lethal Dose is rats is 21 grams per kilogram (rat would have to eat 21 grams of P.G. for every kilo the rat weighed in order to OD)

Boric Acid ... Toxicity Rating of "3-4" ... Lethal Dose in rats is 2-5gr/K

Methylparaben ..."not toxic is the small amounts found in most commercial products ... preservative + antiseptic ... less toxic than salicylic acid + it's derivatives"
~~~~~~
for comparison, at the hospital we use a product called "Surgilube" (same kind of product/use) ... which contains *only* Chlorhexidine Gluconate {Toxicty Rating of "3" ... but has uses as a broad spectrum antimicrobial ... low toxicity by mouth ... LDD in mice is 1.8gram/kilo ... .12% solution is used as an oral rinse in hosp.
