In Reply to: Iguanas First vet visit... was my vet right? posted by BillS on May 20, 2001 at 00:17:22:
Many months ago one of our igs, Dharma, was sneezing what appeared to be blood. As usual she picked the night our regular vet wasn't on call to do this. The covering vet said it was due to lack of humidity. We boosted the humidity and were vigilent in keeping it up around 80-85% and the problem went away.
As for the absesses. We have several iggys here (anywhere from 4-6 on a regular basis) and almost all of them have come to us with abcesses. The vet treated each animal very differently -some abcesses he drained and others he just medicated and yet one he did not treat at all other than to say keep it clean and use antibiotic cream on it. So in our experience we'd have to say that not all abcesses are created equal and that may be why the vet didn't treat it right away. In any case, keep an eye on and it if it appears to be growing in size or change in color call the vet back and demand that he/she treat it immediately.
I do have to ask the obligatory question and please don't take this as an offence as none is meant but is your vet qualified to treat iguanas? I know many vets are not even though they do see them and where you are already questioning their diagnosis, I think it bears asking the question. If your vet doens't have a lot of experience with iguanas, you may want to find someone with more knowledge and experience.
