Vega$', when she lived in a 60 gallon tank, had a 150W CHE in a porcelain-socketed fixture. This was her only above heat source, on 24/7. I attached a dimmer switch to it so that I can control the temps during the day and evening, accordingly. I *never* had the lamp at its full strength, but if I needed to, it was available. We have had some chilly days, and the dimmer switch (along with the thermometers) helped regulate her ambient tank and basking temps.
When she graduated to sleeping outside of her tank at night (yeah yeah, she started sleeping with me and well..got spoiled), I simply used the surge protector to turn off the CHE at night.
