i have a question for all of you. i went to a pet store yesterday evenning and i held a young iguana that a lady had just given to the pet store. it was a very surprisinlgy healthy iguana. its jaw was shaped normally and it was of a normal weight. its eyes were clear as was its nose, color was good, etc. over all it looked healthy. except for one thing. it looked like its skin was very dry and that it had many layers of old shed on its body, mostly on its stomach and its tail. it was very calm and seemed to enjoy me holding it. as i was taking a closer look at its stomach and tail, i noticed little red dots in it scales. most of its scales on its stomach and tail looked half eaten and were truning brown on some of the sides. the pet store was taking basically good care of the iguana as far as i could tell, but they had not noticed that it was infested with mites. i brought it to thier attention as soon as i noticed it. i have 2 questions regarding that:
1. since they said they had the iguana for about a week, is it possible for the mites to have infected the rest of thier reptiles?
2. how hard is it to transfer the mites to my iguana at home from touching this iguana?
i am curious because i ahve never had any experience with mites. i was lucky enough to aquire an iguana without them and have never had an infestation of them. when i got home, i washed my hands very thoroughly and i didn`t hold my iguana because he was already sleeping and i was woprried about the mites. also, the iguana at the pet store i was holding spent some time on my shirt, it was black, and i didn`t see any red spots, but is it possible for me to get infested with mites or for that shirt to put them in my room which could maybe lead to petrie getting them?
i was wondering if the other reptiles could also get infested because i was considering buying a reptile from that store but am now having second thoughts. i only held the iguana for about 10 mins and i noticed from that short amount of time that it was infested with mites. not to mention that mites are aproblem i ahve only read about in web sites, i ahve no first hand experience with them. the pet store has had the iguana for about a week and the have overlooked the probelm for that long. does or should this raise any questions about the care they provide to thier animals?
what do you guys think?
