Sand has to do with a igs hindgut, blockage can happen from the intake of sand. What I have read on it, both Sand and of course gravel too, are two items of many outdoor things that should always be kept away from your ig. They don't even recommend that you let them "taste" it. In case you're not sure about igs hindgut, I'll explain it: Hindgut on a ig, is fold pockets is between the small and large intestines, which slows down the movement of food matter in a iguana's digestional track. These pockets hold microflora, which helps break down food products. If sand would be eat, the is a good chance it could end up in these pockets. Which would leave less room for the microflora's to work on the food. 30-40% of energy a iguana gets from food intake comes from microflora's working in the hindgut pockets. I think you get the picture how important it is not to allow objects that are not food base, to be consumed.
