I know exactly what you mean. That's what happened with my pride and joy, Dexter.
The pet store I went to was a good pet store. They have an iguana rescue program and the people who worked there even tried to discourage me from getting an iguana. At the time I wanted a big lizard, not a little baby. The manager refused to sell me one of the grown adopted iguanas they had.
When the iglets arrived at the store, the manager said he didn't think they were going to make it and that he'd get me another baby iguana if my little Dexter didn't make it.
Dexter was in terrible shape. His skin was practically a chocolate brown, his stomach was up against his back and the tip of his tail was broken. And he was the healthiest one in the lot!
Fortunately, Dexter pulled through and is now a vibrant green with some turquoise and a pot belly that flops all over the place. His tail is just fine and he absolutely loves human contact. He's still small for his age, but I think that's mostly because of how he was treated as a wee little lizard.
End of Story.
