calming down Irish

Now that Irish is settled in and eating well, I've started to handle him. So far I've learned that:
1) He will thrash and tail whip when I take him out.
2) He will head straight for my head when I let him wander my arms and shoulder.
3) He will attempt to jump onto anything in view including: the television, the computer monitor, lamps, doors, dogs, bearded dragon enclosures, and the mirror.

It's really hard to hold on to him since he's so tiny (10 inches STL) and fast. He doesn't seem to like being handled and he doesn't like it when my hand goes into his tank. Now that I think about it, the only things he likes are his branch, his food, and attempting to escape every second of his life. Any sites or tips on getting my Irish the O.T.I.(one tricky iguana) calm? I realize that he is still young, but I want him to grow big and TAME. Tame as in he won't try to escape every time I take him out, not as in he'll heel on command and fetch me the paper. Thanks for any help!
