Don't know why I'm answering this as you specifically addressed this to "green thumbs" and I think I fall into the "plant killer catagory". LOL I will let you know that roses are easy to grow. You can't beat them down with a stick. I don't know about hibiscus'. I'm going to try and get some this year. I would use a good potting soil and for future fertilizing just do it natures way. Put leafs, grass clipping or dead vegatable matter around the base. Just a little so you don't suffocate them. They will decompose and create furtilizer for the soil.
