I'm sorry I have to say it but that was a very naive and anthropomorphic statement and experimental animals are not "taken away from their families". They are bred, weaned, mated, reproduced, and die in the laboratory. And any animal rights activist that decides to release these animals doesn't realize the biological and ecological hazard that person has brought onto himself and the community.
And yes, because of our ability to breed them and control their populations, animals such as rats and mice ARE a renewable resource.
