My seven year old daughter (5 at the time) is actually the one who got us started on reptiles. I used to be scared of them you know the opinion they must be slimy etc... Well anyway my daughter fell in love with all sorts of reptiles and other animals. She decided at the age of three she wanted to be an exotic animal vet and still has that desire. No tame little puppies or kittens for her!! Anyway she finally talked us into getting Iggy Her first Iguana. He had a disease we found out since birth and later died. But since then we have added Timmy (Iguana), Lizzy (Bearded dragon), Steve (Green anole), and Gary (House Gecko). We are now looking for veiled chameleons. All of our reptiles have their own specially designed and built home with their specific needs included. She takes care of the feeding (with my help and supervision) and she handles them at least half of the time. Before Timmy would tame or be calm with anyone else he would sit on her arm and be very quiet and calm until she was ready to put him down. He has never made any move to harm her (Don't worry we keep them separated at breeding season!!) So far we have never had any problems. We make sure everyone practices good hygiene with both germ killer get and the usual washing hands. We don't worry about it as much at playtime but definitely before meals etc. Anyway she has a special way with animals and they are all her babies. My husband is scared of snakes. My daughter was at the pet store holding a ball python (We wouldn't let her buy it at her age and size) that was as long as she is tall. The snake just laid in her arms while she rubbed it. My husband was about to freak and she says "Oh, Daddy it's just a baby!)
Anyway enough of my rambling on. Basically as long as you supervise them and practice good hygeine they should be fine. My youngest is now four and he loves them all too but he is a little rougher so we don't let him have as much contact with them.
