It basically boils down to common sense. You have to pay attention to proper cleanliness and hygene. Not just reptiles but with any animals or other sorce of contamination for that point. If you have piles of poo where the baby crawls then yes you have a problem! During pregnancy it is suggested that someone else due any cage cleaning or other maintainence that would bring you in contact with the animal's feces. With infants and small chidren you are going to have to keep them and the iguana separated for the safety of both of them. And I am not even going into the area of children and large constrictors! You are not diminishing the animal's quality of life by leaving them alone or keeping them apart from small children. Actually, all anthropomorphism aside, that's one of the nice things about reptiles. Most of them would just as soon be left alone anyway. The interaction is more to our benefit than theirs. You do not have to exile your animals to another home just because you have children. In fact I beleive that the presence of other living creatures in the home is good for them both from an educational and emotional standpoint. You just have to give it a little more thought and effort to safeguard both your children and your pets.
And just as a point of reference I have raised 4 chidren and am working on several assorted grandkids and NOBODY has ever gotten sick or injured from my animals.
