Two days ago, I left Bud (my free-roaming, appx. 2 year old male ig) by himself while I went to work (as usual). He had hurt two front claws a week and a half earlier, but I couldn't figure out how he did it, since the only place in my apartment I could find blood droplets was inside his enclosure.
Two days ago I came home and found a corner of the wall-to-wall carpet TOTALLY torn up and bloodied, and my poor baby's claws ruined. I actually found two of them detatched under the carpet. I wanted to cry! He was trying to claw UNDER the sliding glass doors to my outside balcony.
I cleaned him up in the tub, pulled the carpet fibers out of his wounds, and slathered Neosporin all over his front paws. Then next morning, I got up early to take Bud to the vet right when they open the doors. I keep a big dog carrying cage permanently in my car's back seat, and transported Bud to the car in a big duffel bag with towel, hot water bottle, etc. He is usually so good (he travels kind of often), and I left the bag unzipped a little to let in some air. I know, I know, how dumb can you be. That little ******* WRIGGLED OUT and skittered across the lawn. He hid in a thick hedge, and I pawed through until I found him, freezing cold and stuck between the hedge and a brick wall.
The vet checked him out, repaired what he could, and suggested spraying bitter apple for ferrets near the sliding doors and repairing the carpet, of course. So far, I have cleaned up, and screwed down a piece of wooden molding over the entire length of carpet by the doors. But my questions are:
WHY does my ig have such a death wish? Why would he want to be outside in Maryland in February? He can feel how cold it is by the glass! Sometimes, if I or my roommate accidentally leave our bedroom doors open, he climbs onto our windowsills and sits and sits pressed up against the glass between the window and the shade until I come home and find him frozen. :( I give him lots and lots of room to roam, good things to eat, lots of attention, and fun tall things to climb! :( What more can I do?
Someone mentioned a hip leash before. How do I make/ buy such a thing?
Has anyone ever used bitter apple spray? Does it discourage your ig?
How DO you discourage an iguana from digging? PS I am absolutely sure he is male, so I don't think this is egg-laying behavior. He may still be in mating season, but he has been since MID NOVEMBER!!! How long will this craziness last??? He has been sweet and docile throughout the whole thing, except now, when he seems to hate me and want to die. :( Please help me!
