In Reply to: Substrate question, please help posted by Da Truth on January 29, 2003 at 08:21:37:
Below are my opinions of the assorted substrates. I prefer newspaper, indoor/outdoor carpet or linolium tiles for safety and praticality.
:1. Lizard Litter, the stuff that looks like grain
-Can cause impaction and in high humidity or if the lizards goes to the bathroom or it somehow gets wet needs to be changed ASAP as I have seen it grown mushrooms.
:2. Play sand, very cheap and looks good
-Igs are tropical not desert! Sand does not do well in high humidity situations.
:3. The orchid bark/Cyprus mulch substrate for lizards, which I use
-It's ok, can cause impaction and gets expensive.
:4. Dirt, Not one of her fav's, but will use if need be
-What a mess!! We use a combo of dirt and sand for boxes when we have a gravid ig. Not only have I seen them eat it, it always ends up all over the place.
:5. Pine shavings --Give off TOXIC fumes, especially when exposed to heat! Basking lights will cause this as well! Never use aromatic woods in any type of reptile cage. Also, keep in mind that anytype of wood shavings has the possibility of catchng on fire.
There is someone here on this board that uses shavings and claims they are ok, they are NOT, even if placed below a grate floor. That may prevent the ig from eating them but does not stop them from giving off fumes.
