those little claws on my lizard leave big holes in my arm sometimes. i find that if i clip them once every week-2 weeks, they stay pretty harmless. i use just a regular pair of nail clippers, and you gotta be careful not to clip to much of the nail. if you look close, you can easily see where the sharp part and the "good" part meet--then, clip there.
the lizard seems to piss and moan about it the first few clippings. i had to be VERY careful not to injure the animal by holding onto a limb. at first, the easiest way to do it was wait til she was eating (heh, she's fairly indifferent to *most* things then...only focused on stuffing her little face.)
after a while though, she got used to the clipping and didn't really care when i did it.
