At the end of the last semester (December 11th of 2002) my five year old iggy, Boo, came to my biology classroom for a presentation on Salmonella and reptiles.
BOY! Was I nervous! First, we couldn't find something adequate to transport her in... I phoned everyone I knew looking for SOMETHING other than a big cardboard box to take her in... it wasn't adequate and I didn't want to risk it... a friend finally came through at the last moment with... get this... a custom made IGUANA carrier! It was excellent! The perfect thing... just what I needed. large enough to accomodate all of her, but not large enough to let her thrash around too much.
Then... the morning of, I had mapped everything out... get all my stuff together, get her food, let her eat, and then give her a bath. She was a NIGHTMARE... she wouldn't get a bath, she EXPLODED out of the tub when I set her in... she climbed up over me and streaked through the house... I was a mess, she was DIRTY and loving it... and I HAD to get her cleaned up.
MY arms looked like a battlefield even with my careful planning...
But so... myself, and my best friend, who loves Boo just as much as I do, FINALLY got her into class.
The whole lecture was awful. The whole class paid NO attention... they talked over top of me... to ONE ANOTHER... some walked out. It was the end of the semester, so I guess they felt they had a right... and I decided not to bring Boo out till towards the end, because I didn't want TOO much of a disaster...
And she totally flipped me out...
When I took her out she was so CALM! So INQUISITIVE! It was like aliens had stolen my hyperactive baby and replaced her with this calm, quiet, well-behaved little miss... She was very patient... climbed on my shoulders and looked all around but stayed right between my shoulders and my friend's... she was totally relaxed! And then, at the end, the people who were left in the class came up and she let them pet her... Accepted all the publicity with lots of cool professionalism.
Shocked, I tell you...
And even for how horrible the lecture was, I was just emailed my grade from my professor... he praised our lecture as the most well thought out, the best prepared and the most interesting!
And DOUBLE bonus... I got to answer a lot of questions about what iguanas are REALLY like! All because of my perfectly well behaved Boo!
