Logan: Fire investigators believe a pet iguana may have been the culprit behind a fire that destroyed a Logan home Thursday morning.
Logan Fire Chief Craig Charbonneau said a heat lamp in the basement designed to keep the animal warm ignited the blaze that destroyed the two-story house on the corner of 5th Street and Oak Avenue.
"The lizard probably knocked it over," he said.
The occupants of the home were out of town. By the time neighbors reported the blaze and firefighters arrived on the scene just before 5:30 a.m., the house was completely engulfed in flames, Charbonneau said.
"I was the first one there and the roof was already starting to come in," he said. "All we could do was a defensive attack and fight it from the outside to stop it from spreading to the neighboring homes."
It took more than 20 firefighters, including personnel from the Magnolia Fire Department, about five hours to bring the fire under control.
The house was considered a total loss, Charbonneau said.
The iguana was killed, but there were no human injuries as a result of the blaze.
